Who are Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis was set up in 2013 by a group of determined patients, family members, carers and medical specialists, dedicated to supporting those with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and their families. There is currently no cure and very limited treatment. The average life expectancy after diagnosis is 3-5 years. Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis help set up support groups in the UK, educate health professionals about IPF and give funds towards research. They have risen from 3 to an amazing 45 support groups since 2014.

What is Pulmonary Fibrosis?

Pulmonary fibrosis is a scarring disease which affects the lungs. Pulmonary fibrosis is a term that describes the formation of scar tissue within the lungs. It usually occurs around the small air sacs or alveoli of the lungs where it causes thickening and stiffness. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is the commonest form of pulmonary fibrosis. ‘Idiopathic’ means that the cause of the disease is unknown. Unfortunately IPF kills 5,000 people in the UK every year and it is estimated that more than 30,000 people in the UK are currently affected.
