International Cat Day

If you love nothing better than our feline friends, then it’s time to celebrate the special moggy in your life with International Cat Day on Wednesday 8th August. Yes, whether you are someone who pores over cute cat videos on Instagram or who loves to treat your own cat to the finest lifestyle at home, this special day is devoted to all who share your passion!

International Cat Day was first launched in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to celebrate everything that’s great about one of the world’s most popular pets. Figures suggest that there are around 500 million cats owned as pets by households across the world, which is good news for owners as there are proven mental health and stress relief benefits from owning a feline friend.

But it’s also a vital occasion to remember that not all cats are lucky enough to enjoy a pampered existence and a happy home filled with love and adoration. In fact, huge numbers of cats are taken in by rescue shelters every year. Sometimes they are the result of litters which the owner hadn’t planned for, sometimes the pet has become too ill or elderly for their owner to afford, and sometimes people simply change their mind about keeping a four-legged friend around the house.

Whatever the reason, cat charities work tirelessly to re-home their special charges and to educate the public on the importance of neutering and spaying cats to avoid unwanted litters. These charities desperately need support, and International Cat Day is the perfect time to do it. Even better, you don’t even need to donate your own money when you choose to support charities such as Cats Protection with your funds.

Simply head to Give as You Live and set up a free account. Then select your chosen charity to support. When you shop online you simply click through your private Give As You Live account to the relevant retailer, and then shop as normal. This registers your arrival and attracts a donation which will then go to your charity of choice. It really is as easy as clicking through to your favourite websites via the Give as you Live site or app and then shopping online as you would usually. We tell you on the site how much money your shopping will raise for your charity, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can fundraise.

Remember too that you can raise money for your chosen cat charity by treating you or your own moggy to some special treats for International Cat Day.
