‘Never too small to make a difference’ – Act4Africa uses every Give as you Live penny wisely

Act4Africa is an Altrincham-based charity, delivering HIV and AIDS education programmes in East and Southern Africa. For them, every donation made by shopping online via Give as you Live, however small, is put to extremely good use.

As little as £10 pays for one of their life-skills programmes for a young person in Uganda, Tanzania or Malawi. £15 pays for an entire school to undertake a month’s health education programme. All donations contribute to the charity’s larger aims which have so far seen it training 1.25 million young Africans. It also brings mobile testing and advice services to more than 10,000 adults per year.

The charity also offers placements for medical students or other health professionals, retired or on a career break, looking to give their time to ‘challenge cultural behaviours and reduce the threat of HIV/AIDS in east and southern Africa’.

Alison Bell, marketing and trip logistics assistant at Act4Africa, explained how important it was to include Give as you Live online shopping as a fundraising tool.

“Give as you Live is a no hassle way of raising money for Act4Africa and it costs nothing. It’s a great way of donating and helping an amazing cause without actually parting with any extra cash,” she says. “And it doesn’t matter how little one transaction raises because just £10 will help to put a young person through a life-skills programme and help them achieve their full potential. So it doesn’t have to be a big donation to make a big difference and that’s where Give as You Live can really help us.”

The charity’s CEO, Martin Smedley, has just completed a coast to coast cycle challenge with his daughter to raise funds for the charity. For those who haven’t got a head for hills, a little online shopping is another great fundraising option – last month online shopping raised £90.72 for the charity without costing supporters a penny extra.
