Best Birds for Christmas

It’s that time of year again when all thoughts are starting to turn to Christmas. Planning early is key to enjoying stress-free festivities, so now’s the time to start thinking about buying the Christmas bird. Turkey is still the favourite for British families, but there are still plenty of choices to be made — not least whether you want to invest in a whole bird or simply a juicy crown. Whatever you choose, allow around 0.5kg of meat per person, and more if you’re putting turkey curry on the Boxing Day menu as well. Here is a guide to some of the options to make sure your Christmas lunch is a real festive feast that the whole family can enjoy.

Free Range Bronze Feathered turkey | If you want a really tasty bird this Christmas, you can’t go wrong with this succulent choice from Waitrose. Available in a range of sizes, it must be ordered before December 15, and then you can pick it up between December 20 and Christmas Eve. Beat the crowds and choose an early pick-up and then stick it in the freezer until needed. Just don’t forget to get it out again in plenty of time, or those goose-fat roasties will look really lonely on your plate!

Oakham Turkey Crown Stuffed with Pork, Cranberry and Clementine | Save on the waste and the hassle of making stuffing with this juicy stuffed turkey crown from the kings of Christmas at Marks and Spencer. The beautiful presentation will mean that your festive lunch table will look stunning, and your guests won’t be able to wait to tuck in. This would make a great addition to a Christmas buffet as well as being the main event on the big day itself.

Bernard Matthews Farms Golden Norfolk Turkey Self Basting with Giblets Extra Large | This is a great value option if you’ve got a large, or very hungry, family to feed this Christmas. It will serve between 11 and 14 people for Christmas lunch, or you could simply buy it and enjoy lots of leftovers on Boxing Day and the day after, and the day after…

Sainsbury’s Frozen Free Range Bronze Turkey, Taste the Difference | This bird weighs around 4.3kg so should feed around eight people, as long as some folk don’t mind the legs. Its superior quality should make it moist and juicy if you get the timings right. This is perfect for medium-size families where the welfare of the bird itself is an important consideration.

Double Stuffed Turkey Breast | This is ideal for a small Christmas lunch where you want to enjoy your turkey but don’t want to be left eating it for days afterwards. It is filled with two delicious stuffings: a fruity sweet version and a traditional sausage-meat variety. Choose your favourite or enjoy a bit of both. Best of all, it comes ready to roast in its own foil tray — the perfect way to reduce the festive washing-up mountain.
