August 27 was National Burger Day, but for some of us any day is burger day (well, we’d like it to be anyway). Most of us have to content ourselves, however, with a big standard Whopper from Burger King or a Big Mac from McDonalds, but we weren’t content to celebrate such a landmark event in the British calendar with something quite so ‘everyday’. Instead, as a show of appreciation for August 27 and all its patty prowess, here’s a rundown of the nine best burgers in the world.
1. The Bacon and Peach Jam Burger from Seattle’s Li’l Woody’s Burger Joint is made up of a massive burger weighing a third of a pound garnished with a huge lump of goats cheese, caramelised onions, bacon and tangy peach jam. 2. If you like lasagne and chips, then you’ll love the carb-fest that is the Lasagna Burger. It’s the brain-child of Dude Foods, and in particular Nick Chapman, the bloke who came up with the idea of deep-frying balls of peanut butter wrapped in bacon. 3. They say that you are what you eat, but let’s hope that’s not the case when it comes to the Quadruple Bypass burger sold by Las Vegas’s appropriately named Heart Attack Grill. You get four burgers and all the trimmings, and if you really can’t put a price on your health, you can add no fewer than 20 slices of bacon for just an extra $3.70.
4. Fish is healthy, right? It may be, but we’re still not sure about the health value of the Hawaiian BBQ Salmon Burger with Coconut and Caramelised Pineapple Burger if you make it as big as it is in the pictures accompanying the Half Baked Harvest recipe. Mind you, it certainly blows the Filet-O-Fish out of the water and has got to be better for you than something named after lifesaving surgery. 5. Can’t decide between a burger or a hot dog? Have them both on the Sweet and Smoky Bacon Brat Burger. This is another DIY option, and it’s basically just a quarter-pounder topped with bacon glazed with brown sugar, a split bratwurst, cheese and smoked mustard. 6. If you want to add a bit, or actually rather a lot, of spice into your life, you could go for a version of the 50 Alarm Burger from the Slater’s 50/50 sports bar chain in the good old US of A. Billed as the world’s hottest burger, its ingredients list includes battered habanero peppers, fresh jalapenos, bacon habanero spread and ghost pepper jack cheese. It’s so hot that diners are asked to sign a waiver before they tuck in, and it doesn’t just come with fries – it’s served with gloves as well!
7. The Texas Tornado Burger from Texas Joe’s isn’t the biggest or the hottest on our list, but it is one of the tastiest – and you can buy it in Britain. Who needs a simple burger when you can have one covered in brisket, sausage, pulled pork, cheese, an onion ring and chilli? 8. Another Dude Foods creation comes in the form of the Alphabet Sandwich – a whopper that makes the Whopper look like a toddler’s meal. Its vast list of ingredients contains no fewer than 26 items, including a turkey burger! 9. For sheer size and scale, however, the Kookamonga Burger from Kooky Canuck in Memphis, USA, is unbeatable. The restaurant even runs the Kookamonga Challenge. All you have to do to win and get your burger for free is consume it in an hour – and with no help. Seems simple? It would be were it not for the fact that this burger is 12,000 calories’ worth of food made up of four pounds of beef mince, two pounds of hamburger bun, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, cheese and onions. The whole thing weighs a mammoth seven and a half pounds. Now that’s a burger worth celebrating.
