Beyond Autism: Case Study

From banking to shopping, Britain is a nation that lives online. Continual innovations in digital fundraising are offering charities and their supporters new and cost effective ways to donate to charity that can fit in to their current lifestyle.

Give as you Live is one such digital innovation, helping to make online shopping go further.

We spoke to Lucy Newman, ‎Fundraising and Communications Officer at BeyondAutism, about the charity’s experience with Give as you Live and what they’re doing to use the platform to its maximum. BeyondAutism is a charity operating a school that helps children and young people with autism lead fuller lives.

How has working with our products (Give as you Live, Sainsbury’s Everyday Shopping Card and print management) helped your charity?

“We have been signed up to Give as you Live for a few years now. It is really helpful, not only for the much-needed funds that it raises for our charity, but also because it has broadened the ways in which people can support us. At a time when people can sometimes feel overwhelmed by monetary ‘asks’ from charities, it’s really nice to be able to offer a way that they can support us for free just by changing their online shopping habits.”

Can you give us an example of what you have done to promote Give as you Live products?

“We regularly include features on Give as you Live in our newsletters, and in communications with staff, supporters, companies and volunteers. We also use the campaigns provided by Give as you Live, particularly on Facebook and Twitter as it’s so easy to share the materials they give us. It saves us a lot of time and helps to keep our communications relevant to the time of year.”

What communication channels have you used to promote these products? And which do you feel has worked the best for you/had the best results/impact?

“Newsletters (print and online), our website, email sign up campaigns, Facebook and Twitter. They all work well for different reasons, but we think the campaigns have worked best on social media.”

Do you think other autism charities would benefit from fundraising using our products?

“Absolutely and Give as you Live is so simple to get started. It’s a fantastic product that is so easy to use. The Everyclick team are fantastic and so helpful. The materials and campaigns they produce are of a really high quality – and it’s all free and can be completely tailor-made to your charity, saving us valuable time!”

To date you have raised £4358.78 – what does this mean to the charity?

“We are so grateful to everyone who has signed up and shopped to support BeyondAutism. Most of the donations we receive are for specific projects. For a small charity like ours, it is crucial that we also receive flexible donations to use where funding is most urgently required. We use the income we receive from Give as you Live to cover the costs of a wide range of vital supplies and teaching resources for the school, including books and reading schemes for classrooms, playground equipment and resources for speech therapy.”
