Dressing up in school uniform over the age of 18 is usually called fancy dress rather than fashion, but if you want to be top of the fashion class, it’s time to go back to school. Don’t worry, though, as you don’t have to end up looking like an extra from a Britney Spears video (unless you want to, of course). There are plenty of more ‘grown-up’ options that will give you class without you having to spend the day pulling up knee-high socks and rolling down the waistband on your nylon skirt.
The new school of thought is that you can go uniform in glossy trench coats, flirty kilts and snuggly cricket jumpers (if you can stand the heat). Stick to one item and you’ll look stylish rather than strange, and keep away from satchels and Mary Janes at all costs. Sizing is also important. If you’re going for a kilt, don’t go too short or too tight or you might just end up looking like mutton dressed as Larry the
Lamb – or Shaun the Sheep, for those of you young enough to get away with this style. A good choice is the House Of Hackney for ASOS Kilt in Tartan Check.
When it comes to cricket jumpers, go for slouchy and loose. Check out the White Contrast Stripe Cricket Jumper at New Look.
For a really subtle slant on the school-girl look, just grab yourself a blazer, such as the really versatile Zip-Off Blazer from Topshop. Dress up or down, or even wear it to work. You could also go for a trench coat, as Burberry did on the catwalk. If you can’t afford to splash out hundreds, try out Dorothy Perkins’ Black Crepe Trench Coat for size.
