One in three employees admit to shopping online at work

A third of employees have admitted to shopping online whilst they should be working, following research we’ve just conducted – ‘Ten million Brits are shopping on the boss’ dollar’.

thedrum“Drilling down into this data the charity found that, on average, each employee to indulge in such practices squanders 24 minutes browsing shopping websites, adding up to 96 hours of lost productivity over the course of a year.” – The Drum

retail digital“Tesco topped the charts as the most popular retailer to shop through at work, with M&S and thetrainline coming second and third. There has been a 14% increase in the number of transactions between 9am and 5pm, from January to July 2014, compared to the same period in 2013.” – Retail Digital

performance-in“Over a whole year each employee will clock up an average of 96 hours from their online shopping and 11am on a Monday is said to be the most popular time to complete those purchases.” – PeformanceIN

    Hi Natasha,

Thanks for your comment! This is just one of many studies we have conducted about shopping online and charity donors (you can find our more at http://www.giveasyoulive.com/pdf/futurology.pdf and http://www.giveasyoulive.com/digitaldonorreview/download )

This report was not intended to make trouble, it was to highlight that companies and employees could help increase CSR within the work place if they shopped online using Give as you Live – one of our products that helped raise over £4.8 million for UK charities.

    Thanks,
    Jess

This is really just trying to make trouble! Firstly adding it all up over the course of a year is just exacerbating the situation making it seem like more of an issue. Secondly this does not take into account the profession. For example, I used to work in a call centre where I literally sat and waiting for people to call in so I could take their order. If no-one was calling we were free to roam the internet. The boss’s knew and were happy with it, we used to sit and read the paper online or shop, I even did my monthly shop online. Please stop trying to stir things up, Its hard enough to earn the money to buy what you need, if the powers that be think (because of articles such as yours) that their employees are lazy and start monitoring them it will make people uptight and even more stressed sending productivity figures plummeting!
