Summer is always a funny time. We battle to switch off and leave some of our worries behind, while we shop, prepare and pack furiously for our trips away. We lose track of what’s happening elsewhere in the world and hopefully take some time out to take in some new scenery. It’s a really important ritual.
This year, however, the Olympics have given the summer a global backdrop, and I’ve felt much more aware of the rest of the world as I’ve holidayed. I’ve really enjoyed watching the Olympics unfold: firstly from a giant screen in a field, among thousands of other families at family festival Camp Bestival in Dorset, and then from Sand le Mere resort in Yorkshire.
A new summer ritual
Something else has also made me feel more of a global citizen. This year I had a new summer ritual. I sent a postcard to Luqman, the boy whose community my family helps to sponsor in Pakistan through Action Aid. I keep postcards simple, as Action Aid suggests, avoiding displays of wealth (not that our holiday was, by Western standards, particularly exotic this year).
Knowing Luqman likes animals, I sent him a postcard of the seabirds we’d watched at Bempton Cliffs in North Yorkshire. I told him we’d been watching the birds and had a little drive to the sea. I hoped he and his family were well and asked how the were animals near him.
Action Aid is the charity I choose to donate to through Give as You Live. I’m heading down to their offices in London this week to talk with other bloggers to find ways to spread the news about Action Aid and Give as You Live. I’m booked in to stay with family, but I notice travelodge have a brilliant offer below, if you’re looking to book a London break.
