The PlayStation 4 is Sony’s latest games console, and the successor to the PlayStation 3. It is classed as a next-generation console and is a direct competitor to the Xbox One. The core technology that powers t...
show morehe console differs greatly to that of the PS3, and those “under the hood” differences have made it very popular with game developers, who feel that the new platform is much easier to create games for.
Packs a powerful punch
The PlayStation 4 is the most powerful of the next generation games consoles, and it can run games in 1080p at 60FPS with stunning visuals. The GPU has 18 compute units, and the system itself runs super-fast 8GB GDDR5 memory. It also comes with a high performance Blu-Ray drive which ensures that games install quickly. Games that are not installed can be read easily from the disc, and you can use the console as a general entertainment centre. The console can output videos and photos at 4K resolution, but games are not designed to run at such a high resolution.
Connecting the PS4 to your home network is easy thanks to the availability of both Ethernet and Wi-Fi. The console connects to your TV via HDMI and you can connect a range of peripherals via the console’s USB ports.
What’s in the box?
The PS4 comes with a mono headset that can connect to the DualShock 4 controller, which has all of the familiar control options, including dual analogue sticks and rumble, as well as motion detection and a capacitive touch screen that offers new ways for you to control your game.
You can stay in touch with your friends using the headset, and control your games using motion sensing with the camera controller. Many games are designed to work with PlayStation Move.
There are endless customization and profile options. You can show off your trophies in your PlayStation Home, challenge your friends to games online, stream your gameplay live using Ustream, and share your favourite moments retroactively with a single push of the share button. While you are streaming, your friends can talk to you online, comment on your game play, or jump in to play co-operatively or competitively with you.
The PlayStation 4 allows you to take your gaming with you. Stream games to your PS Vita via Wi-Fi, and use the Suspend Mode to pause your games when you’re leaving the console. When you’re ready to start playing again, simply press the power button to dive straight back into the game.
