Top Ten Make-up and Beauty Trends for Autumn

1. Get the rich-girl look inspired by the catwalk shows of Donna Karan, Bottega Veneta, Herve Leger, and Prada. Make-up is all about creating an even effect rather than focussing on one particular feature, and so skin is perfected, cheeks are lightly flushed and eyes are subtly shaded. 2. Let the baby hairs escape a la Stella McCartney, Vera Wang, and Givenchy. Up-dos are so much more flattering with those baby hairs framing the face. 3. Lashes go bold and big, and so invest in a great mascara such as Benefit. Try their Real! Mascara, £19.50 from John Lewis, or a good pair of falsies, such as Eylure Naturalites False Eyelashes Volume Plus, £5.39 at Boots. 4. Up-dos are the hairstyle of the season, and so tie up French twists with ribbon as inspired by Chanel, or pin a high ponytail to the side of your head with a jewelled clip such as the Love Rocks Rhinestone Curve Hair Clip, £20 at Asos, which is just what Prada did in its autumn shows. 5. High-shine lips are essential, so don’t leave home without a good lip gloss in your bag such as Bourjois EFFET 3D Gloss Volume and Shine, £7.99 at Superdrug.

6. If you want to wear your hair down, your locks have to look like they have been expensively coiffed. Sleek and straight is the way to go, perhaps pinned back with a matt barrette, as seen on the Rochas’ catwalk. 7. Eyeliner never goes out of fashion, but real trendsetters will be following the example set by the teams at Roberto Cavalli and Victoria Beckham and applying it on to the waterline – inside the bottom lashes. A good choice is Yves Saint Laurent Black Eyeliner, £25.50 from Boots. Apply some liner outside the lashes as well, and then blend out for a really modern smoky effect. 8. Expand the look further with smoky shading on the eyes using a range of tones such as those in the DIOR 3 Couleurs Smoky- Ready-to-Wear Smoky Eyes Palette, £37 from Debenhams. 9. Forget red lips this autumn. Instead, go for berry tones such as Tom Ford Lip Colour in Violet Fatale, £38 from Selfridges, or soft pinks for a more natural look. 10. The outdoorsy look is also big news, with windswept hair and flushed cheeks helped along by a good blush such as NARS Blush, £23 from John Lewis.
