Volunteering at WDC: Danielle’s experience

Continuing with our staff volunteering pledge in 2016, this week our lovely account manager Danielle spent a day volunteering at WDC, The Whale and Dolphin Conservation at their HQ over in Chippenham. Here, Danielle shares her experience…

Who are the WDC?
WDC was founded back in 1987 and is the leading global charity dedicated to the conservation and protection of whales and dolphins; defending these remarkable creatures against the many threats they face through campaigns, lobbying, advising governments, conservation projects, field research and rescue.

The charity is dedicated to creating a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free.

They have five main campaign areas:
• Whaling
• Captivity
• Fisheries
• Marine protective areas
• Rights for Dolphin and Whales

The WDC also run a Scottish Dolphin Centre in the mouth of the River Spey where visitors can do some land-based dolphin watching and see these amazing animals relish in their natural environment.

Doing my bit
Throughout the day I worked with various team members across a range of departments in the charity. I was so impressed with how all the staff members were so passionate about their roles and how extremely hard they work to ensure the safety of these gentle giants.

It was great to be able to offer my volunteering services and I really got stuck in with helping out with their office administration. I would absolutely recommend volunteering with the WDC, they are so grateful for your time and efforts and I left feeling like I’d really made a difference.

How you can help
The charity not only relies on the financial support from supporters but also relies on volunteers dedicating their time to help the charity. Tina Lambert, Supporter Relations and Office Manager explains;

‘Volunteers are very much part of our team here at WDC and each plays a key role in helping us in so many ways from office administration, educational speakers, research internships (U.S. Office) and even residential placements at our Scottish Dolphin Centre in the Moray Firth, Scotland.

Volunteers here at our Chippenham Head Office bring a range of skills, all offering their support to WDC, anything from a few hours a month to regular weekly volunteering and all of them playing a significant part in helping us achieve our goal of a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free. We would be lost without them!’
